Opacity

YEAR : 2009
EXHIBITION : Nysted InSitu, Group show, Nysted, DK
MEASURES : 717 x 295 x 200 cm
MATERIALS : Lexan boards, acrylic boards, lackered steel profiles, screws, wooden fillets, rubber strips

The work was made for the exhibition project In Situ. The exhibition concept was to make art works which related directly to the townscape of the small town Nysted.

The fishermen from Nysted hang their tar-brown fishing nets on poles on the harbour front. Looking through the nets, they create a variation of opacities depended on the number of layers of fishing net and the position of the viewing subject. This spatial condition is the starting point for Opacity. It consists of five smoke coloured semitransparent acrylic boards. They are systematically distributed so that you can pass in between them. Opacity is a performative space that distorts the visual relation between the subject and the surrounding townscape as well as the interrelation between different subjects as a product of the subjects movement in the performative outline of the work.
